To mark the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, the Federation of Artisanal Fishers of Ecuador (FENACOPEC) commemorated the occasion with a significant event in Puerto La Cruz, a remote community within the Gulf of Guayaquil. This year’s celebration featured the inauguration of a primary school with a capacity for 100 children, made possible through the combined support of private companies, various foundations, and local and national authorities.

The new educational institution aims not only to provide a better quality of life for the community’s children but also to instill the importance of environmental conservation and mangrove ecosystem protection from an early age. Mangroves play a crucial role in filtering pollutants before they reach the ocean, serving as a habitat for rich biodiversity and supporting the local community.

Additionally, in conjunction with the city’s foundational festivities, a traditional costume contest was held, featuring outfits made from recycled materials, showcasing the community’s creativity and commitment to sustainable practices.

Through social media, FENACOPEC expressed its deep gratitude to all the entities and individuals who made these events possible, including the city’s mayor, the provincial governor, the Deputy Secretary of Fisheries, the Deputy Secretary of Aquaculture, the Ministry of Environment, as well as organizations such as Tunacons, WWF, WorldAid, and Azul Sostenible.

This event not only marks a step forward in education and environmental conservation in Puerto La Cruz but also reinforces the importance of mangroves as a unique and essential ecosystem for the region’s sustainability and the well-being of its communities.

Por el Día Internacional para la Conservación del Ecosistema de los Manglares, la Federación de Pescadores Artesanales del Ecuador (FENACOPEC) marcó la fecha con un evento significativo en Puerto La Cruz, una comunidad remota dentro del Golfo de Guayaquil.
