Por el Día de los océanos TUNACONS invita al “Nirsa Ocean Run”
La carrera a favor de los océanos que se corre en la ciudad.
La Fundación para la Conservación de Atunes TUNACONS es partner y benefactor del “Nirsa Ocean Run”, una carrera para la protección de los océanos donde cada paso cuenta para preservar el cuidado de nuestros mares y que deportistas pueden unirse desde cualquier parte del mundo.
Es una carrera con circuitos de 5 y 10 kilómetros destinada a recaudar fondos para la Fundación The Leatherback Project, que los destinará para fortalecer el proyecto de investigaciòn sobre nuevas formas de mitigar la pesca incidental en el sector artesanal costera a través del uso de luces LED, el proyecto se llama “iluminando el mar”.

TUNACONS invites you to the “Nirsa Ocean Run” for the WORLD Oceans DAY The race for the oceans in the city.
The TUNACONS Tuna Conservation Foundation is partner and benefactor of the “Nirsa Ocean Run”, a race for the protection of the oceans where every step counts to preserve the care of our seas and where athletes can join in from all over the world.
It is a race with circuits of 5 and 10 kilometres to raise funds for The Leatherback Project Foundation, which will be used to strengthen the research project on new ways to mitigate bycatch in the coastal artisanal sector through the use of LED lights, the project is called “illuminating the sea”.

Hoy es un día de gran relevancia para el sector pesquero, ya que conmemoramos el Día Mundial de la Lucha contra la Pesca Ilegal, No Declarada y No Reglamentada, así como el Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente. Estas fechas nos recuerdan la importancia de proteger nuestros océanos y la biodiversidad que albergan.
En Tunacons, estamos comprometidos con la conservación sostenible de los atunes y trabajamos incansablemente para combatir las prácticas pesqueras ilegales que amenazan sus poblaciones. Implementamos sistemas de monitoreo y rastreo, así como nuestro programa de observadores a bordo del 100% de la flota, para asegurar que cada captura sea responsable y transparente, promoviendo la sostenibilidad en la región.
Además, en consonancia con el espíritu del Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente, nuestras acciones no solo se centran en la protección de atunes, sino también en la preservación del ecosistema marino en su totalidad. A través del programa de buenas prácticas de manejo y manipulación de la fauna acompañante considerada vulnerable, también trabajamos en el cambio de materiales sintéticos por biodegradables en el 20% de la cuota de plantados de la flota con nuestro prototipo llamado ECAT.

Today is a day of great relevance for the fishing sector, as we commemorate the World Day to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, as well as World Environment Day. These dates remind us of the importance of protecting our oceans and the biodiversity they harbor.
At Tunacons, we are committed to the sustainable conservation of tuna and work tirelessly to combat illegal fishing practices that threaten their populations. We implement monitoring and tracking systems, as well as our 100% fleet onboard observer program, to ensure that every catch is accountable and transparent, promoting sustainability in the region.
Furthermore, in keeping with the spirit of World Environment Day, our actions not only focus on the protection of tuna, but also on the preservation of the marine ecosystem as a whole. Through the program of good handling practices and handling of the accompanying fauna considered vulnerable, we are also working on the change from synthetic to biodegradable materials in 20% of the fleet’s FAD quota with our prototype called ECAT.
Today we reaffirm our commitment to work to eradicate illegal fishing and protect our sea, because together we collaborate for a healthy marine ecosystem.
Articular iniciativas dispersas, maximizar el impacto de las acciones de remediación y conectar proyectos sostenibles con voluntarios y benefactores son las motivaciones que llevaron a la creación de una plataforma con llamado a la acción: MaresLimpios.ec. La Mesa de Trabajo del ODS 14 “Vida Submarina” propuso la creación de esta plataforma participativa para centralizar y coordinar acciones destinadas a reducir la contaminación por plásticos en el Golfo de Guayaquil y otras zonas de importancia ambiental.
Este portal digital facilitará la toma de decisiones informadas y promoverá gestiones prácticas de conservación, uso sostenible y educación ambiental para los ciudadanos que viven en estas áreas y en todo el Ecuador. MaresLimpios.ec es una de las primeras iniciativas de los miembros de la mesa, y se espera que sea adoptada por las autoridades locales para ampliar su alcance. La plataforma acoge proyectos nacionales y busca conectarlos con la participación de empresas privadas, donantes y voluntarios.
La colaboración con la academia fue fundamental en la creación de MaresLimpios.ec. Los estudiantes aportaron con la identidad visual y los de ingeniería en computación hicieron realidad la plataforma digital. En el evento de cierre, se entregó un reconocimiento a estos estudiantes por su valiosa participación en el proyecto.
El lanzamiento de MaresLimpios.ec marca un hito en la lucha contra la contaminación por plásticos y en el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, particularmente con el ODS 14 “Vida Submarina”. Esta plataforma es un ejemplo de cómo la colaboración intersectorial puede generar soluciones innovadoras y efectivas para los desafíos ambientales, porque en Tunacons colaboramos juntos por un ecosistema marino sano.
Articulating dispersed initiatives, maximizing the impact of remediation actions and connecting sustainable projects with volunteers and benefactors are the motivations that led to the creation of a platform with a call to action: MaresLimpios.ec. The SDG 14 “Underwater Life” Working Group proposed the creation of this participatory platform to centralize and coordinate actions aimed at reducing the contamination by plastics in the Gulf of Guayaquil and other areas of environmental importance.
This digital portal will facilitate informed decision-making and promote practical conservation, sustainable use and environmental education for citizens living in these areas and throughout Ecuador. MaresLimpios.ec is one of the first initiatives of the members of the roundtable, and is expected to be adopted by local authorities to expand its reach. The platform hosts national projects and seeks to connect them with the participation of private companies, donors and volunteers.
Collaboration with academia was fundamental in the creation of MaresLimpios.ec. The students contributed with the visual identity and the computer engineering students made the digital platform a reality. At the closing event, these students were recognized for their valuable participation in the project.
The launch of MaresLimpios.ec marks a milestone in the fight against plastic pollution and in the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 14 “Underwater Life”. This platform is an example of how cross-sector collaboration can generate innovative and effective solutions to environmental challenges because at Tunacons, we collaborate together for a healthy marine ecosystem.
Las instalaciones de la Fundación Charles Darwin en Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz, fueron el escenario del primer taller internacional dedicado a las experiencias sobre programas en métodos de recuperación de dispositivos agregadores de peces, conocidos como plantados o FADs, utilizados en la flota atunera de red de cerco en todos los océanos.
Durante dos días de intensas jornadas, más de 60 personas, entre ellos prestigiosos científicos de varios países, representantes del gobierno local y nacional, empresas proveedoras de servicios de boyas, representantes de gremios pesqueros y de la flota pesquera con sus técnicos, e importantes ONGs locales e internacionales, se congregaron para intercambiar experiencias, discutir y generar ideas. Este evento fue coorganizado por la Fundación Tunacons, la Fundación ISSF, y el Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza.
El taller permitió a los participantes aprovechar al máximo este espacio para intercambiar criterios técnicos y recomendar alternativas de programas destinados a la recuperación de plantados perdidos, minimizando así la incidencia en los ecosistemas marinos. Las sesiones estuvieron marcadas por un enriquecedor intercambio de conocimientos obtenidos en varios programas que se están implementando en Galápagos en el Pacífico Oriental, Seychelles en el Índico, y Palmyra en la Polinesia Francesa en el Pacífico Central, contribuyendo a la generación de soluciones innovadoras y sostenibles para la conservación marina.
The facilities of the Charles Darwin Foundation in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz, were the setting for the first international workshop dedicated to the experiences of programs on recovery methods for fish aggregating devices, known as FADs or FADs, used in the tuna purse seine fleet in all oceans.
During two days of intense sessions, more than 60 people, among them prestigious scientists from several countries, local and national government representatives, buoy service providers, representatives of fishing guilds and the fishing fleet with their technicians, and important local and international NGOs, gathered to exchange experiences, discuss and generate ideas. This event was co-organized by the Tunacons Foundation, the ISSF Foundation, and the World Wildlife Fund.
The workshop allowed participants to take full advantage of this space to exchange technical criteria and recommend program alternatives for the recovery of lost FADs, thus minimizing the impact on marine ecosystems. The sessions were marked by an enriching exchange of knowledge gained from various programs being implemented in Galapagos in the Eastern Pacific, Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, and Palmyra in French Polynesia in the Central Pacific, contributing to the generation of innovative and sustainable solutions for marine conservation.
